Men | Mastering Your Finishing Touches

by EMERSON SLOANE

Polishing your look with the details is important for men.  Women accessorize with dozens of options, but men have several style points they must hit in order to make their presentation look its best, every time.  Get into practice paying attention to these details and you'll pull together a confident look all the time.

1.  The Break of your Pants

The break is a singular matter of a man's individual style.  Some guys prefer the bottom hem of their pants to fall a little higher than the top of their heel so that no material from their pants bunches around the ankle.  For others, the rear of the pants touches the top of the heel.  This is standard British style tailoring.

2.  The Cuffs of your Dress Shirt

If you're standing with your arms placed at your side and wearing a jacket or blazer, the cuffs of your shirt should peek out by a minimum of half an inch.  You'll show off a balanced look visually with your shirt and jacket and it'll give you a chance to flash a favorite pair of cuff links and your favorite timeless timepiece.

3.  Your Accessories

A classic watch, a pocket square, and a perfectly knotted tie should be the three items you always remember to check and double check off your list when wearing a suit.   Your watch should have a slim silhouette so that it can slip beneath the cuff of your shirt without catching.  Clean simple lines in your watch design will go with anything you wear.  For pocket squares, a simple white linen square will always be your go-to when you're unsure.  And it's the one piece you should always start with.  Adding navy, medium-blue, deep red, and yellow will help you round out the colors you can wear with almost every jacket you can own.  As for your tie, a wider knot (Windsor) is appropriate with a classic and updated semi-spread collar, which seems to be the growing standard for dress shirts these days.  There are tons of tie tutorials to be found on YouTube to get you started.   The bottom of your tie should meet the top of your belt and no lower.
