Women: 12 Looks to Help You Dig Out of Your "Basic" Scarf Rut

by EMERSON SLOANE

A friend of mine recently returned from Paris and reinforced something I've been thinking about for several days now.  As I walk down the sidewalk, I know that the scarf trend with women is here to stay.  And, increasingly, the infinity scarf-and-boots look seems to be the uniform of Midwestern 20 and 30-somethings--to a fault.  It's hard to distinguish one woman from another with the voluminous folds of fabric draped over their necks, walking side by side.  It's safe.  It's predictable.  And while I think scarves are a beautiful fashion accessory, I think it's gotten stale.

Anyway, my world traveler friend said her eyes were caught hundreds of times on the streets of Paris because it seemed every women wore a scarf.  But, not like the uniform look of most American women.  She said, "It was a sea of scarves, but each woman had her own signature twist.  It was the most individualized trend I could consistently see.  I was mesmerized."

When you see women wearing scarves being lampooned in memes or YouTube videos as "basic" you know it's time to change it up.  Scarves are anything but basic--the prints, patterns, fabrics, and styles are seemingly endless.  Put a new twist on your look--create a signature knot of your own, wrap it around your body, wear one in your hair.  Make your scarf a worthy accessory--not part of a uniform.   Lose yourself on the streets of Paris, right in your own American hometown.  Here are some ideas to inspire you.
