I've talked about my adoration for anything Michael Aram creates and I don't mind extolling his many creative virtues whenever I get the chance. My kitchen holds many of his pieces from serving trays to serving bowls and more. They truly are functional and usable pieces of art for the home.
Aram's story is an interesting one. I profiled him once a few years ago. The gist is that he's a metal-ware, home-ware, and jewelry designer heavily influenced by time he spent in India where he worked alongside local craftsmen learning the art of sandcasting and hand forging metalwork. He launched his own product line in 1989 and opened his first self-named boutique in Manhattan in 2007.
I've had a chance to look at his new dinnerware collection, the Palace collection and it's absolutely gorgeous. I have...feelings about dinnerware. There are beautiful pieces out there for sure, but when it comes to my own aesthetic, I'm a minimalist with my table. I prefer pristine white dinnerware with very little or no embellishment. When I buy tableware, I like to take a look at restaurant suppliers, typically.
Aram's Palace collection takes his love for design and ornamentation of palaces throughout the world and applies it to dinnerware and tableware design. In this collection, you'll find arches, finials, and carved panels from great architecture reinterpreted into his design for the table. The pieces are beautifully architectural while still maintaining an understated simplicity and elegance. It's a winning combination.
