Contact Us

We welcome readers' questions and concerns about any of our stories, features, posts, and future developments.  If you have a question to ask our editorial department, please let us know.  We'll get back to you as soon as we can!  If you're interested in advertising with us, this is also where you can reach out to our staff.

Want to contribute to our magazine?

We are always searching for intriguing personalities with a talent for expressing themselves.  If you're a writer, an aspiring writer, a budding photographer, a seasoned shutterbug, or if your specialty is blogging, we would love the chance to talk to you more about contributing to our publication.  Our overriding philosophy is that we write for people like we'd talk to our friends about style, fashion, food, interior design, and everything to do with style.  Our readers are our friends.  We make everything accessible and we break down barriers.  If you're cool with that, here are our submission guidelines:

Haven Magazine accepts various types of submissions for publication. Please take a few moments to read our guidelines before sending your work to us.

Written Word Guidelines:

All submissions should be sent as Microsoft Word documents. They should be single-spaced, 12 point Times New Roman. Please include your name and email address in the top left corner of each page. Do not submit written word submissions in special formatting. Documents not meeting these minimal requirements will not be considered for publication.  Please, no query letters, unless you are proposing an interview or long-form essay for publication in our Magazine. We prefer to publish innovative and provocative thinkers and we look for both expert and fresh voices in the fields of culture, design, fashion, and culinary arts.  We like interviews that stretch us intellectually yet remain accessible. We’re always on the lookout for voices not traditionally heard in the mass media.

Interested in being a columnist?

Submit a writing sample no less than 650 words and no more than 950 words, after taking a look at our web site and becoming familiar with its content.  Send your submission via email only to actuallyemmysloane@gmail.com.  Include your contact information along with a black and white photo of yourself and a brief bio.  The editor invites new columnists into a probationary period, the terms of which are given below.  Invitations to write columns are made at the sole discretion of the editor.

Essays & Interviews

These submissions are a minimum of 1,000 words and a maximum of 10,000 words. Remember, you’re writing for an audience that is discriminating, so make your longer narratives compelling. We enjoy writing that takes risks.  The content has to be relevant to what we cover in our magazine  Personal writing is welcomed.

Narrative Audio Prose

Submissions about style related to what we normally cover can be submitted as audio files but should take a storytelling form. Audio prose submissions must be in MP3 format and may be up to ten minutes long.

Photography

We’re interested in photographs of many kinds. We’re not looking for photojournalism, just unique perspectives on the world around us as well as artistic representations of fashion, culture, culinary arts, street style, and design.  Please send digital files in the following accepted formats:  .jpg, .gif, .pdf, .tiff. Minimum resolution for your images should be 150 dpi. Please do not send thumbnails of your images as an initial inquiry.

Drawings and Cartoons

Yes, we love them.  Witty, smart, goofy, irreverent, and everything in between.  Please send digital files in the following accepted formats:  .jpg, .gif, .pdf, .tiff. Minimum resolution for your images should be 150 dpi. Please do not send thumbnails of your images as an initial inquiry.

Have a book you’ve recently read from a local or regional artist you’d like to let people know about? Consider writing a review. Send a query to us, first.

Want to Blog for Us?

Our blog is read by thousands of readers every day.  We post six days a week and have a schedule for what goes up and when.  If you're an established blogger already in any of the areas that we cover here at Haven, we would love to take a look at what you've got and discuss syndication possibilities or if you're interested in writing for us exclusively, we're happy to discuss that, too.  Send us an email query with the information provided below.  If you're an aspiring blogger, please send us a query with five samples of blog posts.  They don't have to have been previously published anywhere.  We want to see how you write.

All queries and submissions should be sent to: actuallyemmysloane@gmail.com.  Include a black and white headshot of yourself along with a 150 word bio for publication, in case your work is accepted for publication.  Sorry, we do not accept submissions by regular US mail.

Editor's Advice

Don’t send anything that you haven’t read aloud to or shared with  someone whose opinion you respect. Don’t send anything that isn’t the very best work you are capable of producing. Don’t send anything that doesn’t correspond with what we are looking for.

Simultaneous submissions will be considered, but only if you tell us in your initial email, and if you agree to let us know immediately if your material is accepted elsewhere. We will consider previously published work based on length of time of previous publication and the quality of the work for our readership, on an individual basis.

The Rest

To be considered for compensation, interviews and relevantly written essays, upon acceptance, must be at least 2,500 words.  We do not accept unsolicited work, so please submit a query outlining your interview or essay before sending us anything.  Book reviews, upon acceptance, must be at least 1,500 words.  Rates will be discussed after your query and our reply.  Submissions by previously published writers will be considered for compensation after editorial review and discussion with the writer.  New writers must demonstrate an ability to meet deadlines, generate their own story ideas as well as take direction from the editor, and submit desirable content for publication for a period of six months (3 issues) before compensation terms are negotiated.  There is no guarantee of compensation contracts until the probationary period has passed and there is an editorial evaluation.  Submission of your work is no guarantee of publication.  However, if you are not selected for publication, we will contact you and not leave you wondering.  Compensation is at the sole discretion of the editor.

Please allow 48 hours for our reply after your queries.
